The DLC's first free ranging Natural Habitat Enclosure (NHE) opened in 1981, the 1.2 acre NHE 1. This was the first attempt to introduce lemurs to a natural forested enclosure outside their native Madagascar, and it was a spectacular success! NHE 1 initially housed two groups of lemurs, 15 brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus), pictured shortly after their release, led by the 12 year old Ursala, and 8 ring-tailed lemurs, led by 5 year old Lysis.
