Meet Gothicus, a male sifaka born to Antonia and Gordian via C-Section 1/6/17 (the day before a major winter storm hit Durham). Gothicus had the lowest birth weight (76g) of any surviving sifaka infant ever at the Lemur Center. He had to be hand fed around the clock by the Vet Dept for nearly a week before Antonia was able to properly care for him. He is now thriving and weighs nearly 160 g! This is Antonia's third surviving offspring, one of which (Rupert born December 2009) was delivered naturally, and the other of which (Valeria) was also born (in January 2015) via C section. Another of her infants delivered via C section did not survive. Gothicus will be Antonia's last infant—after all she is nearly 19 years old, and has had three C sections, so she more than deserves a peaceful retirement from breeding!
